Dorothy Moore is a dramatic extension of what happens when a person with a good heart, sharp mind, and track record of achievement yields to an even greater Heart! Her passion and unflagging zeal in pursuing the well-being of the broken, needy, hungry, and hurting has borne the fruit of lives turned around, souls transformed, and precious human beings recovered unto wholeness, giving them a future and a hope. Her story speaks of the possibilities and potential in any environment when the “well-heeled” give themselves to see others well healed.

Here she comes: meet the Lady in the Hood—Dorothy Moore. I met Dorothy in a friendly, unassuming gathering in Dallas. She was most gracious and very humble, welcoming everyone. When she heard that I, along with my late husband Gordon Lindsay, were cofounders of Christ For The Nations, working with thousands of young people from around the world, we became steadfast friends as we visited back and forth. Dorothy’s love for the down-and-outers of all ages and all races was apparent. She invited me to eat with her in downtown Dallas in rundown buildings she had acquired to house men, women, boys, and girls with needs and problems of every kind and even of a very serious nature. Whatever was needed, in whatever location, Dorothy made the move: food, clothing, housing, and teaching them of Jesus and their need to change their lives through His love for them. No finer example will any reader find than this account of Dorothy Moore’s personal story. You will be recommending it to your family and friends.

I had the honor of nominating Dorothy Moore of Dallas as an Unsung Heroine. Dorothy founded Reconciliation Outreach Ministries in 1987 to help inner-city street kids with the East Dallas Crusaders program. Her shelter serves as a safe haven for teens, as well as for women, men, and children of all ages. Dorothy began her shelter with very few resources and an abundance of hope and determination. Community organizations and local corporations opened their hearts to Dorothy. She brought together the many individuals and organizations who worked to make the dream of the shelter become a reality. Because of Dorothy, hundreds of homeless people in Dallas have a roof over their heads, a meal on the table, and the love of a caring neighbor in their hearts. She has mastered the skill of nourishing both body and soul with her understanding and dedication.
